Images of enlarged objects, especially pencils, stem out of pop art – the movement that provided all contemporary art with the freedom of visual language. Here they are used in a different way, with the reference to local roots – the practice of 'Russian poverty' with its love for tactile, natural matter.
Mila Dolman's pencil sculptures emerge from the ground like trees, emphasizing the idea of organic growth. Sharpened coloured cores made of enamelled metal create idealised shapes resembling geometric abstraction, which in combination with the naturalness of wood trunks creates a capacious image of the connection of opposites.
